On February 27, The Leakey Foundation hosted a free online workshop called “Science Through Story” with science communication expert Sara ElShafie. This workshop was designed to help scientists tell compelling stories about their research. It was part of a new Leakey Foundation initiative that provides career development support to our grant recipients.

Drawing inspiration from the creative processes used in the film industry, this workshop covered narrative structure, character, voice, plot, and much more.

Raymond Dart’s 1973 Lecture, “The Discovery of Australopithecus and Its Implications”

Raymond Arthur Dart (1893-1988) announced, described, and named the first discovery of an Australopithecine in the February 7, 1925 issue of Nature. The now iconic specimen consisted of a partial fossilized face, jaw, and cast of the interior of the braincase of a young child from Taung, which Dart assigned to a new genus and species called Australopithecus africanus.

Zarin Machanda on Chimpanzee Communication and Relationships

This month’s featured video is primatologist Zarin Machanda’s talk from The Leakey Foundation’s new web series Lunch Break Science. Dr. Machanda is assistant professor of anthropology at Tufts University and director of the Kibale Chimpanzee Project. Her talk explores the surprisingly nuanced world of chimpanzee vocalizations and gestures.
