July 7 – Saudi Arabia

The second event in the Summer Travel Series will give you an overview of new research on the ecosystems of the Arabian Peninsula. You will explore the earliest known Arabian archaeological sites and learn about the prehistory of the Arabian Peninsula with Leakey Foundation grantee Dr. Michael Petraglia.

About Michael Petraglia

Leakey Foundation grantee Dr. Michael Petraglia is Professor of Human Evolution and Prehistory at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History in Jena, Germany and Principal Investigator of the Palaeodeserts Project. Dr. Petraglia’s archaeological research is interdisciplinary and has centered on subjects concerning human evolution, including the evolution of cognition, the evolution of behavior, and the relations between climate change and hominin dispersals.

He has conducted archaeological field projects in Africa and Asia, primarily in the Arabian Peninsula and the Indian subcontinent. Dr. Petraglia has authored and co-edited nine books and over 150 journal articles and book chapters.

About the tour

• The tour will begin at 10 am Pacific with a presentation by master falconer Kate Marden who will provide a glimpse inside the ancient hunting tradition of falconry in Saudi Arabia. Kate has been a falconer since 1998 and she is the founder of West Coast Falconry, a falconry center based in California.

• Dr. Petraglia will give a presentation about his research and lead you on a virtual tour of prehistoric archaeological sites.

• Following the presentation, you will have the opportunity to interact with the presenters in a lively question and answer session.
