DESCRIPTION:Tusher African HallCalifornia Academy of Sciences \n\n\n\n$25 General admission$20 Cal Academy and Leakey Foundation membersAcademy members and donors\, please log in after adding tickets to your cart to receive your discount. \n\n\n\n\nGet your Tickets\n\n\n\n\nIn the remote Turkana Basin in northern Kenya\, bone fragments and fossil footprints preserve stories stretching back millions of years. Dr. Kay Behrensmeyer brings these stories to life\, showing how scientists piece together ancient ecological settings and animal behavior from what remains after death. \n\n\n\nHer work reveals how climate\, landscape\, and living communities affect both species adaptations and the fate of their remains. Through these deep-time insights\, we’ll explore how the forces that shaped the past influence our world today and into the future. \n\n\n\nAbout Kay Behrensmeyer\n\n\n\nKay Behrensmeyer\, Curator\, Department of Paleobiology\, National Museum of Natural History\, Smithsonian Institution.\n\n\n\nAnna K. (“Kay”) Behrensmeyer is a Leakey Foundation grantee and recipient of the 2024 Gordon P. Getty Award. She has worked in the Department of Paleobiology at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History since 1981; she has been a Senior Scientist there since 2009. She was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2011\, a Member of the National Academy of Sciences in 2020\, and a Member of the American Philosophical Society in 2021. \n\n\n\nBehrensmeyer is a ‘big-picture’ scientist with an over-arching interest in the evolution of terrestrial ecosystems—which in lay terms means understanding how animals interacted with their environment\, and with each other\, in deep time. \n\n\n\nBehrensmeyer has undertaken fieldwork at various paleontological sites in the East African Rift Valley System\, but her longest and best-known involvement is with research on the east side of Lake Turkana where she discovered what\, at the time\, was the earliest evidence for the manufacture of stone tools by early hominins. \n\n\n\nSponsors\n\n\n\nThis lecture is presented in partnership with the California Academy of Sciences. \n\n\n\nThis lecture is made possible by the generous support of the Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation\, Camilla and George Smith\, and the Joan and Arnold Travis Education Fund. \n\n\n\nAcademy members and donors\, please log in after adding tickets to your cart to receive your discount.

SUMMARY:Living on the Edge: Neanderthals and Denisovans in Central Asia
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets Now! \nGeneral Admission: $15\nLeakey Foundation: $12 \nCentral Asia and Siberia have for a long time played a very limited role in discussions of modern human origins. These areas were seen as peripheral to our story\, which was thought to have mostly unfolded in Africa\, Europe\, and Eastern Asia. This story\, however\, is starting to change. \nOver the last few years\, new research is yielding evidence that Central Asia—particularly the Altai Mountains—was hardly the periphery but a hub of interaction for a variety of different hominin groups\, from early modern humans and Neanderthals to the enigmatic Denisovans\, a group only known from a few fragmentary fossils and their DNA. \nIn this lecture\, Dr. Viola will share how ancient DNA and archaeological and morphological data are advancing our understanding of how these groups interacted—biologically\, geographically\, and culturally. \nThis event is presented in partnership by The Leakey Foundation and the California Academy of Sciences. \nSponsored by:\nCamilla and George Smith\nAnn and Gordon Getty

SUMMARY:The New Chimpanzee: A Twenty-First-Century Portrait of Our Closest Kin
DESCRIPTION:Photo Credit: Dr. Craig Stanford \nFamed primatologist Jane Goodall forever changed our understanding of culture and animal intelligence when she discovered that wild chimpanzees were fashioning tools from sticks. Her mentor Louis Leakey exclaimed “Now\, we must redefine ‘tool\,’ redefine ‘man\,’ or accept chimpanzees as humans.” In the 21st century\, we continue to redefine ourselves in light of new revolutionary discoveries about chimpanzees. \nIn this lecture and his new book The New Chimpanzee\, Craig Stanford reviews what the past two decades of chimpanzee field research has taught us about the origins of human social behavior\, the nature of aggression and communication\, and the divergence of humans and apes from our common ancestor. From culture to warfare\, from our diet to our politics\, the study of wild chimpanzees continues to change the way we understand both human nature and the apes themselves. \nThis event is produced in partnership with the California Academy of Sciences. \nSponsored by:\nAnn and Gordon Getty\nCamilla and George Smith

SUMMARY:Atapuerca: Crossroads of Human Evolution in Europe
DESCRIPTION:Get tickets now! \n© Atapuerca Foundation \nArchaeological sites at Sierre de Atapuerca in Northern Spain offer extraordinary insight into the evolution of humankind. Atapuerca is a unique treasure trove that includes the earliest and most abundant evidence of humans in Europe\, the earliest evidence of human cannibalism\, and possibly the first burial in our history. Atapuerca is a UNESCO World Heritage site celebrated for its outstanding contribution to reconstructing the earliest human communities in Europe. In this talk María Martinón-Torres will discuss her work tracing the origins of our closest extinct relatives\, the Neanderthals. She will also share how fossils of Homo antecessor\, an early human species\, found at Atapuerca have shifted our understanding of the ancestry of the first Europeans. \nThis event is produced in partnership with the California Academy of Sciences. \nSponsored by: \nAnn and Gordon Getty \nCamilla and George Smith \nVirginia and Wilson Crook \nRebecca del Rio and Numa Marlborough

SUMMARY:The Origins of the Genus Homo
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets \nKNM-FR181 © Fred Spoor \nWhen did our ancestors look the way we expect the earliest members of our genus to have looked? When did they behave in the way we expect the earliest members of our genus to have behaved? The search for what defines the genus Homo has spanned decades and is still debated among scientists today. In this talk\, paleoanthropologist Dr. Bernard Wood will survey the history of attempts to find the earliest members of the genus Homo\, including very recent and controversial additions. He will review the complications that arise from defining the genus and discuss how half-a-century of paleontological research has taught him what to look for within the hominin fossil record when searching for the origins of our genus Homo. \nPresented by The Leakey Foundation and the California Academy of Sciences \nWith generous support from:\nCamilla and George Smith\nAnn and Gordon Getty \n  \nCheck out our Origin Stories podcast episode featuring Bernard Wood!

SUMMARY:Humankind: How Biology and Geography Shape Human Diversity
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets Now! \nWhat effects have other species had on the distribution of humans around the world\, and what effect have we had\, in turn\, on their distribution? And how have human populations affected each other’s geography\, even existence? Alexander Harcourt brings these topics together to help us understand why we are\, what we are\, where we are. It turns out that when one looks at humanity’s expansion around the world\, and in the biological explanations for our geographic diversity\, we humans are often just another primate. Humanity’s distribution around the world and the type of organism we are today has been shaped by the same biogeographical forces that shape other species. \nThis lecture is presented in partnership with the California Academy of Sciences with support from Ann and Gordon Getty and Camilla and George Smith. \nTickets are $15 for general admission and $12 for members of the California Academy of Sciences or supporters of The Leakey Foundation. SUMMARY:Evolution and Spread of the Most Cooperative and Invasive Species: Us
DESCRIPTION:Scientists have identified several milestones in the evolution of the way humans find and consume food: increased meat portions\, diet diversity\, and the transition to food production. These changes have had far-reaching impacts on biological\, behavioral\, and culture evolution.\n\n\n\n\nIn this talk\, Dr. Curtis Marean argues for another food-related milestone: the turn toward foraging dense and predictable food resources. This shift in behavior led to elevated levels of group territoriality and conflict\, which may have provided the ideal conditions for the evolution of the hyper-cooperative behaviors unique to modern humans. This coupled with the uses of newly invented projectile weapons contributed greatly to our ancestors’ ability to spread rapidly throughout the world\, eliminating other competitors and driving many prey species to extinction. \n\n\nThis lecture is presented in partnership with the California Academy of Sciences. With generous support from:\nAnn and Gordon Getty\nCamilla and George Smith\n\nThe concourse parking garage will be open for this event.

SUMMARY:Cooking for Calories: Food Processing and the Shape of Human Energy Gain
DESCRIPTION:All human cultures process food extensively by cooking and non-thermal means\, a feature that makes us unique among species. Why is food processing so universal? When did it begin? And why might it threaten our health today? In this lecture\, Rachel Carmody presents evidence from diverse fields\, showing that food processing increases the calories we extract from the diet\, leading to competitive advantages in the past and challenges for our present and future.

SUMMARY:Olduvai Gorge and the Origins of Human Ecological Dominance
DESCRIPTION:Intelligence and technology have made humans one of the most adaptable species\, and also the most ecologically dominant. With this dominance we have surpassed levels of planetary sustainability and are causing a modern mass extinction. \nIn this lecture\, Rob Blumenschine describes nearly 30 years of research at Olduvai Gorge that sheds light on the origin of these capabilities in the earliest stone-tool maker\, Homo habilis. In habilis we see the emergence of brain sizes larger than those of apes and the distinctly un-primate-like behaviour of competing with large carnivores for food. New methods for understanding this novel adaptation suggest that our ecological dominance had its beginnings in a tool and food procurement strategy that placed our ancestors at the base of the carnivore hierarchy and exposed them to great predation risk.
