SUMMARY:Being Human: The Primates Who Tell Stories
DESCRIPTION:Join cognitive psychologist Tania Lombrozo for an evening exploring humans’ unique storytelling ability. Learn how these “stories\,” or explanations\, are central to our sense of understanding the world around us. \nWe humans are curious creatures. When we don’t understand\, we ask questions. Why is the sky blue? How do birds fly? Why do we behave the way we do? We demand answers\, simple explanations that provide the reason why\, and they are key to how we conceptualize the world and how we exchange ideas. These explanations we form are at the core of our basic cognitive processes like learning\, inference and categorization. \nBeing Human founder Peter Baumann will join Dr. Lombrozo following her talk to further investigate how curiosity is an essential part of the human experience. \nAbout Being Human \nBeing Human mixes short talks from great minds with fun hands-on experiments\, drinks\, conversation\, and storytelling. Each month we’ll explore different aspects of our evolution\, our behavior\, and the human experience. \nDoors open at 6 pm for the Being Human Lounge.  Mix and mingle with your fellow humans upstairs in Public Work’s Odd Job Room. Enjoy a different local food vendor and thematic specialty cocktail each month\, plus a fully-stocked bar of beer\, wine\, and delicious cocktails. \nThe Main Room opens at 7 pm for seating. The talk will begin shortly thereafter. \nSeating is limited and available on a first-come first-serve basis. There is plenty of standing room for everyone. \nAge Limit: 21+

SUMMARY:Beyond Creation and Evolution: Human Origins Studies in a Secular\, Media-Saturated World
DESCRIPTION:Religion and science battled through the Renaissance and Age of Reason. In this struggle\, science overcame\,  and the discovery of evolution by means of natural selection and speciation (nicely coincident with the discovery of the human fossil record) has been cast as the long-sought\, final proof of a naturalistic human essence. It was actually more of a lock on a door that was already closed by people like John Locke and Sir Francis Bacon.\n\nNow there are different\, bigger dangers looming that we can address with the science of human origins. This isn’t creationism in Kansas anymore\, and it takes a diligent support community to identify objectives. So what is the use of the fossil record in this new time\, and how do we approach it? Can the empirical reality of the human fossil record bring people together in a world of increasing extremism? The fossil record is real\, and studying these fossils to illuminate human origins has the potential to go on forever as long as fossils continue to be found\, curated\, and preserved. They are a stable repository of information about what we are\, and as long as the Enlightenment is not extinguished\, any group that endeavors to preserve this legacy will always be remembered.\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. This talk is presented in conjunction with the Smithsonian Institution’s Human Origins Program traveling exhibit\, Exploring Human Origins: What Does It Mean To Be Human?
