Funding exploration and discovery
Since 1968, The Leakey Foundation has awarded over 3,000 grants to support groundbreaking human origins research in 110 countries.
The Leakey Foundation is the leading nonprofit funder of human origins research. We award approximately $1,000,000 each year in grants and scholarships to further our mission to explore and explain our shared human story.
Leakey Foundation Research Grants support PhD dissertation research and post-PhD research across multiple disciplines related to human origins, evolution, and behavior.
Disciplines supported include but are not limited to archaeology, biological anthropology, paleoanthropology, primate behavioral ecology, genetics, geology, anatomy, morphology, paleobotany, paleoclimatology, and behavioral ecology of contemporary hunter-gatherers.
Funding priority is commonly given to exploratory phases of promising new research projects that will increase our knowledge of human origins, evolution, behavior, and survival. We particularly welcome proposals that take an innovative or multidisciplinary approach and proposals from PhD candidates.

Our Work
The bobolink is the only american bird with a white back and a black underbelly. In the past, this bird was sometimes referred to as “rice bird” due to its penchant for eating grains. It can be found throughout North America and Canada.
The first time I saw a bobolink, I thought it was flying upside-down! It is far more common for the underbelly of a bird to be lighter than its back.

This prestigious program provides scholarships to outstanding graduate students from countries with limited opportunities for advanced training and education in fields of research related to human origins.
When to apply
- February 15 for first-year applicants
- March 1 for returning applicants

- Up to $15,000
- Most Baldwin Fellows receive two years of funding.
