SUMMARY:Frans de Waal: Different - Gender Through the Eyes of a Primatologist
DESCRIPTION:Doors Open & Check-In: 5:45 PM PDT \nProgram Begins: 6:30 PM PDT \n\nIN-PERSON TICKETS (limited) \n  \nONLINE-ONLY TICKETS \n  \n\nHow different are men and women? Do they differ naturally or artificially? Do we find the same differences in our fellow primates? Do apes learn sex roles\, too\, or is gender uniquely human? \n  \nIn Different\, primatologist Frans de Waal s de Waal discusses insights into the origins of sex and gender from studies of both human and animal behavior. Different provides a thought-provoking review of the long-running debate about the origins of sex and gender. De Waal peppers his discussion with details from his own life – a Dutch childhood in a family of six boys and decades of academic turf wars over outdated scientific theories. He also discusses sexual orientation\, gender identity\, and the limitations of a strict binary. Nature produces more variability than most human societies are prepared to recognize\, and primate groups often include (and tolerate) exceptional individuals. \n\nTICKET INFORMATION \n\n\nIn-Person Tickets – This lecture will be held in-person at the Commonwealth Club’s headquarters in San Francisco. The capacity for the in-person component of this program is reduced to meet COVID guidelines\, so be sure to purchase your ticket early! SUMMARY:Games\, Stories\, and Science for Successful Public Engagement
DESCRIPTION:Speakers:Dr. Katie Hinde \n\n\n\n\n\nCost:Free with registration \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAmerican Association of Biological Anthropologists and Leakey Foundation Communication & Outreach Award in Honor of Camilla Smith 2022 award winner Dr. Katie Hinde discusses the importance of cooperation\, community\, and storytelling for sharing science sustainably. \n\n\n\nOver the past fifty years\, researchers have made extraordinary discoveries that help us to understand For tens of thousands of years\, sharing knowledge about the natural world has been part of what makes us human. Indeed\, humans have many adaptations for fireside storytelling\, shared experiences\, artistic imagery\, and “jokey joke joke jokes”. And yet\, too many scientists ignore the evidence and continue to inadequately blather dry facts. Such approaches do not improve scientific literacy or inspire public enthusiasm. In this lecture\, Dr. Hinde presents insights from studies of human adaptations for story-telling and social learning and highlights the example of March Mammal Madness. \n\n\n\nThis program features a 45-minute live-streamed lecture by Dr. Katie Hinde followed by a 15-minute Q&A session moderated by Dr. Briana Pobiner featuring live viewer questions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Katie Hinde is an associate professor in the School of Human Evolution and Social Change\, Center for Evolution and Medicine\, at Arizona State University. As director of the Comparative Lactation Lab\, Dr. Hinde investigates the evolutionary ecology and behavioral biology of milk\, mothers\, and infants. Decoding mother’s milk insures enhanced precision medicine for the most fragile infants and children in neonatal and pediatric intensive care units. Transdisciplinary approaches to mother’s milk research\, along with public engagement\, facilitate discoveries at the bench and their translation to applications at the bedside. Dr. Hinde showcases research on mother’s milk\, breastfeeding\, and lactation for the general public\, clinicians\, and researchers at her blog “Mammals Suck… Milk!” and her TED talk “What We Don’t Know About Mother’s Milk” has ~1.5 million views. Hinde founded and directs “March Mammal Madness\,” a month-long public engagement campaign that showcases animals\, ecology\, and behavior to hundreds of thousands of participants annually. Dr. Hinde is the recipient of the 2022 AAPA & Leakey Foundation Communication and Outreach Award in honor of Camilla M. Smith. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nNote: The recording of this event will be available immediately after the live event concludes and accessible using the same link used for the live stream. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is presented in partnership by the American Association for Biological Anthropologists’ Education Committee and The Leakey Foundation. \n\n\n\nGenerously sponsored by the Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation\, Camilla and George Smith\, The Brown Foundation Inc.\, and the Joan and Arnold Travis Education Fund.

SUMMARY:Virtual Lecture: The Secrets of Chimpanzee Society
DESCRIPTION:Register for free today!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat can the private behavior of chimpanzee society teach us about human evolution and our own societal development? \n\n\n\nBiologist Liran Samuni from Harvard University’s Department of Human Evolutionary Biology specializes in the study of underlying mechanisms of cooperation and intergroup relations in chimpanzees. In this lecture\, she’ll explore some of the more fascinating aspects of group relationships in chimpanzees\, from cooperation and conflict to group belonging\, solidarity\, and in-group support\, providing a glimpse into how our own human behavior in societal systems might have occurred. \n\n\n\nDr. Samuni is the 2021 recipient of The Leakey Foundation’s Gordon P. Getty Award Laureate. This prestigious award is given to an individual who shows extraordinary originality and dedication in their intellectual and professional pursuits while exemplifying a multidisciplinary approach to human origins research. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Liran Samuni is a behavioral ecologist and primatologist and currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Pan Lab\, led by Dr. Martin Surbeck at the department of Human Evolutionary Biology in Harvard. Dr. Samuni is a Leakey Foundation grantee and the 2021 recipient of the Gordon Getty Award. She completed my PhD in Biology at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in 2019 and received her Masters in Zoology from the Tel-Aviv University in 2013. She studies the intersection between intergroup dynamics\, cooperation\, and social bonds in chimpanzees and bonobos\, our closest living relatives\, as windows into our past. She approaches these questions by observing wild chimpanzees at the Taï National Park\, Côte d’Ivoire\, and wild bonobos at the Kokolopori Bonobo Reserve\, DR Congo. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSponsored by:The Ann and Gordon Getty FoundationCamilla and George SmithThe Joan and Arnold Travis Education Fund \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister for free today!

Learn more and join! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Rachna Reddy is a Postdoctoral Associate in Evolutionary Anthropology at Duke University and Research Associate in Human Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University. She is a Leakey Foundation grant recipient who investigates how social relationships shape human life by studying our closest living relatives in the wild. By following known individual chimpanzees and bonobos through rainforests\, Rachna observes their day-to-day experiences and learns how and why they form\, break\, and maintain different types of relationships as they grow up and grow old. Most of her research takes place at Ngogo in the Kibale National Park\, Uganda. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Jan Engelmann is Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of California\, Berkeley. Jan studies the evolution of cognition and behavior by comparing chimpanzees\, one of our closest living relatives\, to humans across different cultures. One main research focus is the evolution of cooperation. Most of what makes humans such unusual primates has to do\, in one way or another\, with our especially social and cultural lifestyles\, which result in cooperative forms of thinking and acting. Jan is interested in how cooperation in chimpanzees differs from\, and is similar to\, cooperation in humans. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSponsored by:The Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation\, Camilla and George Smith\, and The Joan and Arnold Travis Education Fund.

SUMMARY:At the Root of Human Hair
DESCRIPTION:Why do humans have the bulk of our hair on our heads\, not our bodies? \n\n\n\n\n\nThis important but often neglected evolutionary question is central to the work of Tina Lasisi\, a biological anthropologist at the University of Southern California. In this talk\, Lasisi will tease out the mysteries behind why humans have scalp hair and why we may have developed different hair textures as we’ve evolved. She will share the unique methods used in her research\, including the use of robots with wigs to understand the thermoregulatory role of scalp hair and its protection against solar radiation\, as well as her insights on why tightly curled hair is unique to our species.  \n\n\n\n\n\nEvent notes: SciCafe is 21+ and free with RSVP. This event is an in-person lecture in New York. A recording of the lecture will be available several weeks after the live program. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Tina Lasisi is a biological anthropologist with an interest in studying the evolution and genetics of human hair and skin. She is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Southern California in the department of Quantitative & Computational Biology. Her work focuses on developing rigorous methods to understand the landscape of biological variation and a critical lens to investigate how that overlaps with various social concepts. She aims to provide people with the knowledge and tools to understand how we can study human variation and how it matters in everything from cosmetics\, to technology and medicine. She also hosts a show on PBS Terra called Why Am I Like This? and you can find her on Instagram\, Tiktok\, and Twitter. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThis program is presented in collaboration with the American Museum of Natural History. \n\n\n\nSponsored by:The Ann and Gordon Getty FoundationCamilla and George SmithThe Joan and Arnold Travis Education Fund \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister for free today!

SUMMARY:The Botanic Age: Plants and Human Evolution
DESCRIPTION:This talk challenges the idea that stone tools and hunting fueled early human brain evolution. Instead\, it suggests that the “Botanic Age\,” focusing on botanical innovations during the first three million years of hominin evolution\, was crucial. Early hominins’ transition to bipedalism led to infant care challenges\, prompting mothers to create botanical baby containers akin to slings. This innovation sparked new forms of mother-infant communication\, setting the stage for advanced cognitive skills\, including language and music\, long before stone tools emerged in the Stone Age. \n\n\n\nCo-sponsored by the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Made possible by support from the Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation\, Camilla and George Smith\, and the Joan and Arnold Travis Education Fund. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Dean Falk is an American evolutionary anthropologist who lives in Tallahassee\, Florida\, where she is the Hale G. Smith Professor of Anthropology and a Distinguished Research Professor at Florida State University. Much of her work focuses on the evolution of the human brain and the associated emergence of language\, music\, art\, and science. A main focus of her research continues to be the important but frequently neglected role played by women and children during human evolution\, as discussed in her book Finding Our Tongues: Mothers\, Infants & the Origins of Language (2009).
