Grants Application FAQ

Is my research project within the range of projects that The Leakey Foundation funds?
The Leakey Foundation was formed to further research into human origins. Recent priorities include research into the environment, archeology, and human paleontology; into the behavior, morphology, and ecology of the great apes and other primate species; and into the behavioral ecology of contemporary hunter-gatherers. Other areas of study are rarely considered.

If you feel your project may be at the edge of those projects funded by our foundation, or if you have a question about whether we fund your type of research please send an email containing your name, the title of the project, and a paragraph description of the project to purview@leakeyfoundation.org. A decision about your research project will be sent back to you.

Is there a downloadable version of the application?
No. Our application is now only available online, and the online form must be completed while connected to the internet.

Is there a paper application or a "four page" application?
No. If you see references to a paper application or a "four page" application, please let us know exactly where you saw the reference by copy/pasting the URL from your browser's address bar into an email to grants@leakeyfoundation.org.

Can you move or resize the "Instructions" boxes in the online application?
Our instruction box currently can't be made invisible or moved. This is a limitation in how the application was designed. We'll work to fix it in future versions.

In the meantime, there are a few things you can do to change the size relationship of the instructions. Please follow the directions below. We hope something listed below will do the trick.

  1. IN WINDOWS:
    1. resize the window
      1. if your window is not taking up the whole screen, click the button marked with a rectangle to the left of the "X" button in the top right hand corner.
    2. increase your screen resolution. In windows:
      1. right click your desktop
      2. select the "properties" option from the pop-up menu that appears
      3. click the "settings" tab in the window that appears
      4. drag the slider marked "Screen Resolution" to a setting to the right of where it currently is (higher resolution).
      5. click "apply"
      6. if your screen goes dark, don't worry. Wait 15 seconds and it will change back to the resolution it was set to before. Now try a lower setting.
      7. Now resize the window as in 1 above.
      8. if there are no higher settings, or the higher settings don't work for you, try the other suggestions below.
    3. decrease the text size on the page
      1. determine which browser you're using.
        1. if your browser has a little blue "e" with a piece of paper in the top left hand corner, you're using internet explorer. Follow those directions below
        2. if your browser has an orange fox encircling a blue orb in the top left hand corner, you're using firefox. Use the instructions for Firefox and Google Chrome below
        3. if your browser has no icon in the top left hand corner, and a long interrupted blue bar with no title, and near the minimize/restore/close icons in the top right hand corner it says, "Google", you're using google Chrome.
      2. In Firefox and Google Chrome:
        1. on your keyboard, hold down the [Ctrl] key and hit the [-] button (two to the left of backspace). This will decrease the size of the items on screen. The instructions should now be smaller. [Ctrl] + [+] will make the text bigger again.
      3. In Internet Explorer.
        1. Go to the "View" menu
        2. move your mouse over the "Text Size" option and select "smaller" or "smallest" from the list of options that appears.
        3. to make your text big again, go to the "View" menu
        4. move your mouse over the "Text Size" option and select "Normal"
  2. IN MAC OS X:
    1. resize the browser window
      1. click and drag the bottom right hand corner of your browser to resize the window.
      2. click the title bar and drag the window offscreen to the left to allow more room for resizing.
      3. click and drag the bottom right hand corner of your browser to resize the window again.
      4. click the title bar and drag the window to the right so you can see the data fields again.
