The Leakey Foundation is pleased to announce we were given an 80% Efficiency Rating during our most recent audit.

This means the 80% of our annual budget is granted to scientists and used for our educational programs.

In the American Institute of Philanthropy’s view, 60% or greater is reasonable for most charities and the most highly efficient charities are able to spend 75% or more on programs.

From the AIP website: "AIP is a nationally prominent charity watchdog service whose purpose is to help donors make informed giving decisions."

We spend the remaining percentage on fundraising efforts and general administration.*

* AIP has not officially rated The Leakey Foundation.

Research Grants

Grants General Excavation

Research Grants are awarded twice annually (in May and December) and constitute the majority of the Foundation’s grant program. The Foundation funds research related specifically to human origins.

Eligibility

Advanced doctoral students (advanced to candidacy) and established scientists are eligible for general research grants. There are no citizenship restrictions. However, all applications must be in English.

Funding

The majority of the Foundation’s Research Grants to doctoral students are in the $3,000-$13,500 range. Larger grants, especially to senior scientists and post-doctoral students, may be funded up to $22,000. Priority of funding is commonly given to exploratory phases of promising new research projects that meet the stated purpose of the Foundation.
